On this week’s episode, Mark and Andy sit down with Dr. Kevin Blackwell. Dr. Blackwell serves as the Assistant to President for Church Relations and the Director of the Ministry Training Institute (MTI) at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. He also serves local churches as an interim pastor and has a heart for church revitalization.
Online Education and Certificates are available from Samford’s MTI in the following areas: Pastoral Leadership, Disciple Making, Worship Leadership, and Church Planting
In our conversation, Dr. Blackwell mentioned a great resource: Four Chair Discipling by Dann Spader.
Quotables
- “Church revitalization is not for wimps. It is a real battle, emotionally and spiritually.”
- “The reality is, if you are going to turn a church around through a revitalization process, you’ve got to know that you have to lock in there for the long haul. Revitalization doesn’t come overnight. It’s not something you can order from LifeWay.”
- “I think that when you make changes, instead of just putting an announcement in the bulletin, if you would invest in relational capital that needs to be there beforehand… People will give you some grace, if you give them some grace.”
- “You’ve got to build in a system that is sustainable. It has to be bigger than you. It’s got to be something you can give away.”
- “When you know Christ; when you know forgiveness; when you know amazing grace; there are always opportunities to be excited about what God is doing in your life and in your church’s life.”
- “I think another big issue for our churches right now: we’ve got to figure out how to increase our assimilation… The baptismal waters are not the finish line, they are the starting gates.”
